Nail pops are exposed nails that poke through shingles. They are one of the most common causes of roof leaks.
There are several reasons nails can pop through shingles.
- Nails exposed to moisture
- Nails placed between seams of roof decking
- Improper nailing
- Sideways nailing
- Rotten wood in roof decking
When a nail pops up, it can create a small hole or gap in the roofing material, such as shingles or underlayment. This opening allows water to penetrate through the roof, leading to leaks. The risk of leaks from nail pops is higher in areas where rain, snow, or other forms of precipitation are common.
Repair nail pops as soon as possible to prevent water from entering under the roofing system and causing further damage.
